* Alcohol  Involved crash means one of the parties  involved  in a crash had consumed alcohol, not necessarily the person killed.

+ Traffic deaths in 2009 are 24% lower than 2005!
+ The 3075 traffic deaths in 2008 is the lowest number of traffic deaths since before 1991 .
+ The Number of all fatalities that  involve alcohol is at the lowest since 1998.
+ However, alcohol related deaths have not dropped as fast as non-alcohol related deaths with the result that there has been a steady increase of alcohol involvement  traffic deaths since 1997, and alcohol related deaths now stands at 41% of deaths.
*   Since 1991, 75,016 people have died in California through traffic crashes. 



+ The 3075 traffic deaths in 2009 is the lowest number of  deaths since before 1991.
+ Traffic deaths in 2009 are 10% lower than 2008.
+ Traffic deaths in 2009 are 24% lower than 2005
+ 2009 is the fourth year in a row there has been a decrease.






+ The 1256 alcohol  traffic deaths in 2009 is a decrease of about 9% from 2008. 
Notice the drop in alcohol related deaths is lower than all deaths. See next chart.

+ 2008 is the third year in a row there has been a decrease in the number alcohol related.










+ The percent of all fatalities that  involve alcohol is at the highest level since 1992.

+ There has been a steady increase of alcohol involved traffic deaths since 1997.  The percent of alcohol involvement is now 10% higher than 1997.





+ For Drivers there has been a  dramatic drop in 2008 in fatalities for both alcohol involved and non-alcohol involved traffic deaths, although similar to the state averages.
+ The drop in non-alcohol involved drivers was twice that of alcohol involved, but again similar to state averages.



+ For all the different roles in crashes the level of alcohol involvement in the crash is rising.
+  The level of alcohol involvement is relatively the same for all roles. 



+ For non-alcohol involved drivers there has been a 32% drop in deaths since 2005.

+ For alcohol involved drivers there has been a 21% drop in deaths since 2005.






+ For non-alcohol involved passengers there has been a 42% drop in deaths since 2005, although 2009 displayed little change from 2008.

+ For alcohol involved passengers there has been a 33% drop in deaths since 2005.


+ For non-alcohol involved Peds there has been a 25% drop in deaths since 2005, .

+ For alcohol involved peds there has been a 13% drop in deaths since 2005.


+ Deaths for both males (26%) and females (36%) since 2005.



+In recent years, the percent of alcohol involvement has been increasing for both genders.



+ For all age groups there has been a dramatic drop in the number of deaths in the last 3 to 5 years.
+ There has been a steady drop since 1998 in the of deaths in the 0-15 age group.

   


+ There has been a steady increase since 1998 in the percent of alcohol involved crashes for nearly all age groups.


+  For Males, there has been a steady increase since 1998 in the percent of alcohol involved crashes for nearly all age groups.

+  For Males, all age groups between 21 and 50, alcohol crashes made up more than 50% of all deaths.  Age group 16-20 is close to 50% and has shown a dramatic rise since 2007.

+ For Females, there has been a steady increase since 1998 in the percent of alcohol involved crashes for nearly all age groups.

+  For Females, age group 26-3- is close to 50% and has shown a dramatic rise since 2007.
