Traffic Alcohol Fatality Trends  and DUI Arrests
in California  Years 1991-2006


Findings:
Since 1998 there has been a 32% increase in Alcohol Related Traffic Deaths.

Since 1998 there has been a slow decrease in the number of Drinking Under the Influence (DUI) arrests.


In 1998 there were 176 DUI Arrests Per Alcohol Death in 2006 there were only 124 DUI Arrests Per Alcohol Death.

Overall, since 1998, there has been a 30% drop in Alcohol Arrests Per Traffic Alcohol Death

+ Overall there has been a dramatic decrease since 1998 in the rate of DUI arrests per alcohol related death.

+ In 1998 the rate of DUI Arrests per alcohol related death was 176, in 2006 it was 124.  The rate for 2006 is a slight up tick from 2005, the first appreciable postive change since 1998.

+ Overall, since 1998, there has been a 30% drop in Alcohol Arrests Per Traffic Alcohol Death







+ The Number of DUI arrests in the state have gone down nearly every year since 1991, even after the number of alcohol related fatalities started to go up 1998.



 










+ Unlike DUI Arrests, there has been a steady increase in the number of alcohol related deaths in California. 


(Alcohol related deaths did go down in 2007 but comparative data on DUI arrests is not avialable yet.)
